Housekeeping Cottages on Beautiful Fourth Lake.
The Mountain View cottage was built after the boat house was moved and rebuilt as the Roaring Brook Cottage. It served as a Casino for many years. Like the word 'camp', the word 'casino' has a unique meaning in the Adirondacks. The former can be anything from a humble lean to used by a hunter to a chateau built by one of the great American Industrial Leaders in the late 19th or early 20th century. Likewise, a Casino was a place where campers went to dance, get ice cream, play ping pong, play games, do puzzles, socialize or play cards (apparently sometimes for money, thus the name). Remember that the activities of all Adirondack visitors, no matter how humble, follows the norms set down by the rich at the beginning of the 20th century, mainly, hiking, boating, fishing, hunting and other seasonal sports followed by equal amounts of time spent reading, learning, socializing and of course eating. The Casino was where the socializing took place. The descendants of the original 'robber barons' were avid gamblers.
The Mountain View Cottage is located on a point overlooking Fourth Lake. It offers a great view of the lake from three windows (facing south, east and west) in the kitchen/dinning/living area. One customer said that she "could fish from the kitchen table." The camp fire, grill and picnic table are right on the lake. The bedroom in the copula is the coolest room in the northeast in the summer (and probably in the winter too.) It has windows on all four sides, and it setting on a point ensures a cool, evening, Adirondack breeze off the lake. Sweet dreams.
