The Fulton Chain of Lakes has provided days of paddling to countless groups of adventurers.  Paddlers can go from Old Forge to Blue Mountain or from Old Forge up the Racket River to Saranac with very few carries.  Nearly 30,000 miles of streams and brooks that emerge from the mountains and forests form the network from which 1,000 miles of powerful Adirondack rivers gather their volume and strength. These rivers and their networks are perhaps the greatest multiple-use natural resources in the Adirondacks. Camping is available along the route. Guide books are available at local bookstores and outfitters.  The Old Forge Hardware store has an excellent book section.
The Fulton Chain of Lakes is now part of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail (NFCT) which provides a paddling opportunity from Old Forge to Fort Kent, Maine. The NFCT  site has maps and trip planners for sale. Canoe and Kayaking Magazine had a feature article on the Trail which highlights Old Forge.

There are a number of outfitters who teach classes, guide excursions, provide canoe and kayaks and pick up services (you can even be picked up by a train) or of course sell you a boat.

Here are some gage readings for local rivers for you 'River Rats' who like your water white. Black River near Boonville, Mohawk River at McKeever for the lower Moose and First Lake at Old Forge for the Middle Moose.

And of course we cannot forget rafting.  Trips are available on the Hudson, Moose and Black rivers. There are a wide variety of trips from the leisurely float to the flat out scary white water adventures.  Check with the outfitters for details.  The key of course is the water conditions
