Murganzer on beachPlease don't feed the ducks.  It is controversial, but I will tell you why.  Come here in late October and see the ducks looking for all the summer guests instead of feeding on what wild ducks should be feeding on, in the case of these guys, it is fish. Because of this, some of the young ones might not be strong enough to make the flight south.  If you want to feed the ducks, please buy them an airline ticket to Miami. Also, it is not particularly healthy having them hang around.

The Loons of course are our fowl of choice here in the Adirondacks.  Their strange call and fishing habits (were did you think Looney Tunes came from) and unusual coloring make them fun to listen to,  see and be around.  Their call seems to capture the favor of being in the Adirondacks: mysterious, awesome, alluring and majestic.  Sure beats the crows.  Fisherman for years killed them, since they are very good fisher birds, but they are now making a comeback.  If you see them in the lake with their chicks, who like to ride on momma's back, please keep your distance.  Adults don't seem to mind you around in a canoe or kayak and will naturally stay away from you.  They are frequent visitors to the water front and it is fun to figure out where they will come up next after they dive for fish.
